5 Things You Shouldn't Be Doing at Breakfast
Make sure these breakfast no, no's aren't part of your morning routine.
We know that breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, but are we getting this morning ritual right? It seems that ticking the breakfast box isn’t enough to ensure we’re giving our body the right nutrients and energy to keep us on our game all day long. So to find out what we shouldn’t be doing during brekkie time, we’ve pulled in naturopath and founder of one of Australia’s leading muesli brands Food for Health, Narelle Plapp, to find out the biggest breakfast mistakes. 1. Don't skip breakfast Breakfast means: breaking the fast. We need to fuel our bodies with the right nutrition to kick start our metabolism, feed our brain and to manage our weight. Without breakfast we lack the energy our body needs, this is when we fall into the trap of grabbing a sweet snack mid-morning. 2. Don't eat too many carbs Traditionally our go to breakfasts are high in carbs: toast and/or sugary cereal. Eating this type of breakfast each day will just increase blood sugar levels for a short amount of time, which then results in a quick decrease leaving you hungry and your energy levels low. Opt for higher protein options, or learn how to combine carbs with the right balance of protein for a longer sustainable energy source. Start with poached or scrambled eggs on toast accompanied by sliced avocado. Another option is a nutrient loaded smoothie. Add: Banana, mix of high protein seeds like chia, teff, & linseeds, full fat yoghurt, flaxseed oil or coconut oil and psyllium. 3. Don't just drink coffee We tend to go for a coffee or tea on rising rather than a glass of water. Both tea and coffee contain caffeine which is not only a diuretic but also dehydrating. For every cup of coffee you have you strip out over 2 cups of water from your body. The best way to start your day, is with a warm glass of water with a squeeze of lemon and ditch the caffeine. 4. Don't just drink your juice Juicing your fruit causes the fruit to lose important vitamins, minerals and fibre, and instead spike your sugar levels. Best way to eat your fruit in the morning is whole. 5. Don't fill up on breakfast biscuits These are starting to pop up everywhere! Don’t be fooled and make sure you read the nutritional panel as they are laden with sugar….as most biscuits are! What I dislike most about these it that it sends the wrong message to children. They will grow up thinking a biscuit is suitable for breakfast which is certainly not the case. Breakfast Tip Narelle says, "By understanding the concept of a good breakfast and its benefits, people will see what works for their body and what doesn’t and change their meal accordingly. As long as you eat breakfast, you’re already one step ahead."
